Ida Maria - Better When You're Naked (RCA)
Lisa Norman | Sunday, 20 July 2008
Described by NME as the "midpoint between the Strokes and Ms Winehouse", Ida Maria is known for her crazed stage presence and vocals reminiscent of Bjork and Courtney Love. She is, in essence, pure eccentricity.
'Better When You're Naked' resembles Chumbawumba's 'Tubthumping', but in a good way, though you might not have thought it possible. It's a track that will rock you to the very end with its unusual mix of electrifying drum beats, frantic guitar licks and gravelly vocals.
Ida crescendos and decrescendos constantly in order to get her audience going, creating a highly infectious chorus as she shouts: "I like you so much better when you’re naked/I like me so much better when you're naked!". It's cheeky, quirky and fantastically strange.
Ida Maria is mad as a hatter and her freaky personality is reflected in this great little track. It's a shouty pop/rock driven anthem that'll drive parents crazy - a true reflection of teen angst sung by a powerhouse of a voice. Like Marmite, you will either love it or hate it.
With a mass of female popster/rocker types currently on the market, only time will tell on Ida Maria's success. This is one for the inner rocker and rebel in all of us.
